Hip Hop, these days, to me, is generally disappointing. I’ll listen to some music which I kind of like, see the rapper in an interview, and almost without exception he comes off as either stupid, pretentious, or crazy. Then some of them have relatively decent lyrics and a good sound, but the videos are packed with the same old Hip Hop cliches, butts whirling, gangster poses, and nonsense.
But a rapper sometimes comes along like a cool breeze, refreshing, and catches my attention. He’s unique, innovative, saying things the others don’t say. Macklemore is in this class of rapper. His latest song, “Same Love” is one of those songs, too, which takes you off-guard: You don’t expect to hear such a song in Hip Hop. No posing and posturing, no wanna-be gangsterism, no saggy pants garbed clones looking clownish and being obnoxious; no hatred and doctrine-spewing aggression; just simple, to the point, profound, and honest.
But I’ll let you be the judge of that.
