Back in the day Will Smith gave us some of the best comical renditions of Hip Hop dance moves on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Well, these days we might think those moves are funny, but back when they were popular we were bustin’ moves and takin’ names with those fly dances. Pee Wee Herman comes to mind, with Joeski Love’s one-hit wonder about Paul Reuben’s iconic character.
But the Pee Wee Herman was not the most popular dance by any means. Here I want to look at the gold of that era, the late 80s, the golden age of Hip Hop, when we had the coolest, ice-cold, command of the dance floor.
Here are my favorites.

While whole troupes of girls were on the dance floor doing Janet Jackson moves, I was trying to find a girl to dance with me so I could show off my skills doing the Wop, along with some even older school poppin’ and lockin’. The Wop involved flailing your arms to the sides and upwards while swinging your hips simultaneously; if you were really adept, you’d kick a leg up with the same motion as your arms and legs swung up. It’s an easy move as long as you have some rhythm and coordination. Don’t be scared, try it. It will be a cool retro dance to bring back!
The Cabbage Patch
This is another one where you get to use your arms in a weird way. It’s a bit awkward when you’re trying to look cool with your dance partner and you can’t figure out what to do with your hands. This is your chance to make your arms look freaky good when you bust a move.
You bring your fists up tight to your chest and keep the elbows down and make a circular movement with those fists from your body going outward. It’s cool I promise. Again, bring your hips into the movement for added effects.
Finally we have the Running Man, a move that was all over the place back in the 80s, maybe part of the early 90s. I think Kid n Play did it and like I said, you could catch the Fresh Prince doing his version of it. Not an easy move and I never mastered it. However, it’s pretty cool.
Obviously, it looks like you’re running when you execute this fly dance move. But you don’t actually go anywhere. It looks a bit like the Moonwalk, but you are just picking your feet up and staying in one place. Check it out.
So, there you have it. The best of Old School Hip Hop dancing. Can’t go without a little Joeski Love.
